Happenings In Annapolis

The 2011 Legislative Session has passed the midway point. The pace of decision-making is accelerating. Focus remains on the budget, funding proposals and gay marraige. Transportation funding initiatives and a proposed increase in the alcohol are the only potential new revenue sources that have "life" and they are far from on the fast track for passage. Because of the budget challenges, few policy initiatives of any consequence are under consideration. For the business community, two issues of concern remain unresolved. Legislation to raise Maryland’s minimum wage to $8.25 per hour this year, $9 next year and $9.75 in 2013. The legislation would also index Maryland’s minimum wage to the Consumer Price Index beginning in 2014. The second proposal prohibits the use of credit rating checks for prospective employees. Both bills will be heard by the House Economic Matters Committee on Tuesday March 8.
